A Fine Set of Ten Single Regency Mahogany Chairs
A Fine Set of Ten Single Regency Mahogany Chairs
Each chair has a finely figured headrail carved with a spiral motif which is supported on moulded uprights which continue down each side of the seat and become the front legs.
The splats have mirrored 'C' scrolls supporting a superbly carved shell and the seats are caned with squab cushions.

English, Circa 1820

Reference Gillows supplied eight similar chairs to Broughton Hall Yorkshire in 1811-13. Illustrated in Country Life April 7 1950 page 957

The possibility that these chairs are by Gillow is further supported by the quality of the timber chosen and the depth of carving on the headrail and splat.
